Important Update from Joel Burkum

May 7, 2020

Dear CGS Friends and Families!

     I’ll cut to the chase…

Due to restrictions and guidance from the Cass County Health Department we received on May 5th regarding Coronavirus gatherings regulations, I have made the call to cancel our entire 2020 Camp of the Good Shepherd Summer Bible Camps season.

We were told the following by the Sarpy/Cass Health Department Community Health Planner:

“After speaking with our health director, she said dorms are not directly listed in the directed health measures.  Her guidance would be to plan for no camp in June.  A group of 20 may be possible in July.”

Since there is not an established date to reopen camps without distancing or stringent disinfection/cleaning guidelines, we think it is wise to not open at all for overnight camps this summer.

I am very sad to have had to make this announcement, but we feel it’s an issue of stewardship that makes sense.

But, TAKE HEART, friends!  We are not planning to stop all events at CGS this summer!  We have some fun “Plan B” events in mind.  Here are some of them:

Plan B1:  We are NOT, at this time, planning to cancel our Rally@theCamp! program at camp scheduled for Saturday, May 30th.  Rather, we are changing it up “Coronavirus-style” to create our first-ever DRIVE-THRU RoadRally@theCamp!  I am SUPER-EXCITED about this event!  We are preparing a drive-thru road at CGS that will allow you to visually connect with us at camp, while staying safely-distant in your car (Think zoo drive-thru!) as you drive through our entire campus.  It will be a 15-to-20-minute tour of Wonderfully Wacky Camp of the Good Shepherd Goodness!  The camp gates will open at 1PM and shut at 3PM.  We will have fun giveaways for everyone, and fun sights and events for your viewing pleasure (while implementing suggested safety guidelines).  We will take photos of all the cars that come out for the drive-thru, and we’d love to have you decorate your car with an encouraging message for us to post on our website and FB site.  Be watching for more details to come as we get closer to Saturday, May 30th.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Plan B2:  We plan to hold a Rally@theCamp! group “Celebration” gathering at camp on Saturday, August 29th.  We hope that everything is up and back to semi-normal by then, and that we’ll be able to bring families and individuals together for worship, fellowship, fun and a wonderful BBQ picnic.  So, mark that event on your calendars and watch for details to come as summer transpires.

Plan B3:  We are planning to hold graded Bible Mini-Camp Online Events throughout June and into July via ZOOM.  Soon, we will be sending information about these free events and how your kids can participate.

Plan B4:  Attention, Sheep Dogs!!!  Brian Montieth, our CGS Facilities Manager, still needs your help for some small-group service projects at CGS this summer.  If you would still like to join us for day and overnight service project events at camp, send in your Sheep Dog Teen Helper applications and we’ll be in touch with you about service opportunities.  We plan, at this time, to have Sheep Dog Teen Helpers help during the camp session dates they requested on their application forms.  Send your applications to:  FGCI/CGS, P.O. Box 434, Council Bluffs, IA  51502-0434.

So, dear CGS friends, be of good cheer!  While we are canceling our overnight Bible camps, we are continuing to move forward to make Camp of the Good Shepherd more beautiful, functional, fun and ready to help each one of you to “have fun learning about Jesus!”

We look forward to seeing you at camp soon!  God bless you!

Hi, CGS Friends!

We’re happy to welcome Anna Kraft (one of our long-time CGS camper and helper veterans) officially as our 2020 CGS Summer Intern.  Today, April 15, is her first day on the job.  Welcome to our CGS 2020 staff, Anna!  We’re so glad to have you join us.

Anna will be working closely with me and our CGS staff to prepare for and promote our 2020 camp season.  You will be receiving updates from Anna from time to time this spring and summer as we prepare for our 2020 Camp of the Good Shepherd Summer Bible Camps.

See you at camp!
